Looking for high-protein, low-sugar snacks?

Start by checking both numbers on the same portion. This collection uses total sugar, which includes naturally occurring and added sugars. A snack with 0g added sugar can still exceed the 5g total-sugar cutoff.

Meeting these two limits does not guarantee a better overall grade. Some cheese snacks, for example, have little sugar and meet the protein cutoff but contain more saturated fat or sodium. The grade and full label help you compare those differences.

How our grades and claims work

How we select these snacks

Every snack must have a checked label showing at least 5g protein and no more than 5g total sugar per label serving. These are our browsing cutoffs, not FDA high-protein or low-sugar labeling claims. Missing and less-than values do not qualify.

  • At least 5g protein and at most 5g total sugar in the same label serving.
  • Both amounts must be recorded on checked nutrition evidence, with a known serving size.
  • Keep the portion in mind. Two servings contain twice the protein and sugar shown for one.

Amounts are per label serving. Open a product for its original package, full ingredients, and evidence. A missing value stays “Not recorded.”

Questions about this collection

Why not use added sugar for the cutoff?

Total sugar answers how much sugar is in the snack overall. Added sugar answers a different question about the recipe. We show both, but this collection uses total sugar so a snack cannot qualify just because its sugars occur naturally.

Are these snacks sugar-free?

Not necessarily. This collection allows up to 5g total sugar per serving. Sugar-free is a separate labeling claim, and a rounded 0g nutrition value alone does not establish it.

Why are there fewer snacks here than in the protein collection?

A product must meet both limits at once. Protein bars and yogurts can meet the protein cutoff while exceeding the total-sugar limit. The broader protein collection includes those products.
